Cool Outdoor Games for Holidays with Teenagers

Teenagers love to get together for birthday, holidays or “just because” parties. It gives them time to socialize as a group and have fun all together, outside of school. Sometimes however, just hanging out is not enough to equal a memorable event, so a few games can get them moving, keep them laughing and allow them to make a few really great memories. Below is five easy games that teenagers can play outdoors that cost little or no money and are easy to set up.

1. Bean Bag Toss – All you need for this game is two pieces of cardboard with two holes cut out of each (or more holes if you have bigger cardboard) and two bean bags minimum. The cardboard is propped on a slant against a tree, picnic table, chair or whatever is handy and each hole is labeled a certain point. The teens are divided into teams and throw a number of bean bags to get them in the hole and you keep score. You can either play the first team to a certain score wins or have each person throw a certain number of times and the team with the highest score wins.

2. Scavenger Hunt – These are always a huge success with teenagers, especially if you have neighbors involved. The teenagers are divided into teams and they have to find things that you can have hidden or borrow things from neighbors or go to another neighbor’s house and sing, etc. Someone at the house keeps track of what the teams have fulfilled on the list until one team finishes their whole list and they are the winners.

3. Frisbee Golf – Set up a golf course with things you can throw a Frisbee into, through or on such as a garbage can, hula hoop, net, etc. Score is kept like you would at mini-golf where you count how many times it takes you to throw your Frisbee at that particular obstacle.

4. Balloon Relay – Split the teenagers into groups of three or four and blow up balloons, the long balloons work better then the circle ones. Starting at one end of the yard, the first teenager puts the balloon between their knees and passes it to the next person between their knees. After they have passed they go go the front of the line to keep the line moving toward the goal at the end of the yard. If the balloon falls or pops the team has to start over. If it is summertime this is a lot of fun with water balloons.

5. Obstacle Relay – Set up a relay around the yard with things that they have to do like, putting on an item of closing, jumping rope five times, blow up balloons, crawl under a table, eat a piece of cake without hands, act out an animal, etc. The teenagers are divided into teams. One teen starts the relay going from station to station until they’re through the whole relay and they tag the next person on their team to begin the obstacle. The first team to complete the obstacle wins.

If you have a little extra cash you can even buy very inexpensive prizes for games like hair accessories, nail polish, Frisbee, visors, hats, candy, etc. The more fun your teenagers have playing their games the more they’ll appreciate anytime you spent organizing the activities for them.
